BackForward Variable: Ionospheric Radio Absorption

Definition
Full name Ionospheric Radio Absorption
Definition Attenuation of a radio wave passing through the lower ionosphere.
Measuring Units dB Uncertainty Units dB
Horizontal Res Units km Vertical Res Units
Stability Units dB (Stability /decade)

Comment: Energetic particle precipitation and solar X-rays cause variations in the ionospheric radio absorption. Radio absorption can be monitored with ground-based radio wave sources and with riometers. Riometers measure the attenuation of vertically propagating radio waves from distant stellar sources at 30/38.2 MHz.
